Artist Statement

Art offers insights that can make life understandable, enjoyable and manageable. It can stir the mind, heart and soul and become a catalyst that kindles the work of discovery. Great art must express all that “genius feels in the presence of Nature”, according to Auguste Rodin. Through beauty, peace, humor, provocation, shock and surprise, art may find a way to enter the consciousness often bearing insights that make life meaningful as the gift that it is. When this happens, art is truly a rewarding endeavor!

As a musician often has a favorite instrument, many artists have a favorite medium. I have chosen clay because it is warm, appealing, humble and sincere as the earth itself. It is unique as the most impressionable and spontaneous material. It records every thought, movement, hesitation and confidence of the artist handling it. Finally, with its associations and history, it is the best choice to explore the human figure in relationship to other life and to the landscape, a central concern of my work.
